Poly(4-vinylpyridine), abbreviated as P4VP, is a pyridine-functionalized weakly basic polymer with pendant para-pyridine groups, featuring outstanding pH responsiveness and metal coordination capacity. It dissolves in DMF, DMSO, chloroform and low-carbon alcohols while insoluble in water and acetone. Custom molecular weights are available upon request.

Appearance
Industrial and reagent grades are white to light yellow hygroscopic powders. The particle fineness and bulk density vary with molecular weight.
Structural & Core Characteristics
It features a carbon main chain with pendant para-pyridyl groups. The lone electron pair on nitrogen atoms of pyridine rings serves as the core functional site:
1. Weak alkalinity: Pyridyl nitrogen can be protonated with a pKa value of 4.7~5.2. Its surface charge changes with ambient pH, delivering pH responsiveness.
2. Coordination capacity: Nitrogen atoms chelate with various metal ions including copper, nickel, cobalt, palladium and platinum.
3. Intermolecular interaction: Forms hydrogen bonds and ionic complexes with acidic organics and polymers.
Solubility
Soluble in polar organic solvents such as DMF, DMSO, glacial acetic acid, methanol and ethanol;
Insoluble in low-polarity solvents including pure water, acetone, alkanes and diethyl ether.
Thermal Properties
Glass transition temperature (Tg): approx. 142℃. It tends to oxidize and discolor under high temperature, and degrades upon prolonged heating.
II. Storage, Handling & Safety Instructions
Storage: Keep tightly sealed, protected from light and stored in dry ambient temperature. Avoid moisture, strong oxidants and high temperature.
Safety: The powder generates dust easily; wear dust-proof masks during handling. Rinse thoroughly with plenty of clean water upon skin or eye contact.
This product is irritant and inedible. Dispose of waste materials in compliance with solid chemical waste regulations.

1. Catalysis
Serves as polymeric chelating carrier to immobilize palladium, platinum, nickel and other metals for heterogeneous catalyst preparation. It acts as a solid acid scavenger for easy catalyst recovery and reduced residual contamination.
2. Wastewater Treatment & Metal Recovery
Efficiently adsorbs heavy metals (copper, nickel, lead, etc.) and organic acid pollutants in wastewater. Desorption and regeneration can be realized via pH adjustment to recycle metals and reuse the material.
3. Functional Coatings & New Energy
Used as surface modification coating to improve substrate adhesion with anti-corrosion and antibacterial effects. It works as an additive for perovskite and dye-sensitized solar cells to optimize charge transfer and enhance cell stability.
4. Nano-Material Self-Assembly
Fabricates block copolymers with other polymers. Self-assembles into nanomicelles, porous films and nano-templates via hydrogen bonding and pH response for separation membrane and nanoreactor production.
